BRIEF PROFILE: A former U.S. Navy pilot, lawyer and congressman, Nathan Petrelli is the son of Angela and the late Arthur Petrelli. He is also the older brother of Peter Petrelli, and the two are very close despite Nathan's earlier selfish behaviors. He is married, though they are separated, to Heidi Petrelli, with whom he has two sons, Simon and Monty, both of whom no longer live with him. He is also the biological father of Claire Bennet, whom he only came to know in recent years, having thought her dead prior to this.

In possession of the power of self-propelled flight, Nathan spends a great deal of time fighting having such powers, but eventually not only learns to use them willfully, but also comes to respect, rather than vilify, those with powers. After suffering the apparent death of his brother for the second time, Nathan descends into depression, cutting off all connections in his life. Later, however, he is instrumental in not only discovering the truth behind the string of murders/attempted murders involving the older generation of power-possessors, but in seeing Strain 138 of the virus destroyed by convincing Peter that Adam is a danger. He is shot twice at the end of the season two and his fate, life or death, was not explicitly stated at the end of the episode. → [extended information]
